The number of prescription items for treatments relating to the gastro-intestinal system has been increasing each year, from 60 million prescription items in 2007 to 104 million in 2020. Net ingredient cost has varied over this period however. Proton pump inhibitors constitute over two thirds of the prescription items in this section.
